Newcastleton Forest Scottish Borders is a magical woodland. I visited it for a relaxing weekend walk. The forest is lush and teeming with moss, lichen and dense knotted trees. It has a mystical atmosphere and is purported to be haunted. I added a dark background to this work as I wanted to accentuate the mystery that Newcastleton presents as you meander through it. Consequently, there is even a ‘Hanging Tree’. Also, I heard an eery laugh as I was crossing the river which could have been a fairy or a ghost. It was probably more likely a fellow hiker in the distance.
At one point, I came across lichen and moss which were some of my favourite shades of pink. I couldn’t quite believe that these existed in nature as well as in my art. Unsurprisingly, I can spend so long gazing curiously at the flora of the forest floor and wondering at the colours and patterns. I even spotted a tree that had bark that looked out at me like eyes. It was even complete with eyelashes of moss. Very strange, yet fascinating.
Biography
I am a visual artist based in Midlothian, Scotland. I create paintings of woodland landscapes and gnarled trees that I come across on my walks through nature. These woodlands are mainly in Scotland with some abroad in Europe and Canada. I make my work using water mixable oil paint on canvas to avoid extra fumes whilst I’m working at my studio in Edinburgh. In general, colour plays a very important role in these works. Warm and unusual hues of pinks, oranges and reds set off the lush green tones of the foliage around. I enjoy making drawings of animals using fine liner pens with some additions of paint. Particularly, I enjoy creating drawings of the native and plentiful wildlife in Scotland. Always, I am working to expand the selection of these animals.
