Roslin Glen, Midlothian, Scotland depicts the lush woodlands of Roslin Glen Country Park. Nestled by the River Esk and between the trees lies the gunpowder mills. They ran from the early nineteenth century to the nineteen fifties and now only the crumbling remains still survive. In fact, they were once part of a thriving industry that supplied gunpowder to several wars including World War II. The mills are taken over by foliage as they are in real life. It has surrounded and infiltrated this symbol of industrial progress. Indeed, the buildings have been transformed from the purely pragmatic into something mystical. They blend with the forest, rising up from the river valley like a mythical fortress.
I chose a deep, plum pink to contrast with the intense greens of the glen. The ombre effect of the ground and white details enhance the play of light. Also, I feel this adds to the overall fantastical element of the landscape.
This painting along with two other works were part of The Big Art Show, Paisley ran by Outspoken Arts from 31st August 2023 – 18th November 2023.
