Woods near Ballater is based on a walk just outside the village of Ballater, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Balmoral Castle, a favourite of the late Queen Elizabeth II, is a short fifteen minute car ride away. The walk itself is circular and is named ‘Seven Bridges’. This is because it passes by some delightful historic bridges as the path meanders by the River Dee. There was something about the light and the way it shone through the trees. This particular part of the path captivated me so much that I had to depict it in a painting. The path seemed to endlessly stretch out in the distance shrouded by the majestic, tall trees. Of course, I also thoroughly enjoyed the pastoral scenes of Highland cows and a well deserved coffee and cake to finish off the walk at a delightful place called The Bothy Cafe back in the centre of Ballater.
This painting along with two other works were part of The Big Art Show, Paisley ran by Outspoken Arts from 31st August 2023 – 18th November 2023.
